World No-Tobacco Day 2008
The World Health Organization (WHO) designated 31st May of each year as the annual World No-Tobacco Day (WNTD). The theme of the 2008 WNTD is “Tobacco-Free Youth”.

There are approximately 1.8 billion young people aged between 10 and 24 live in the world today, with more than 85% live in developing countries. In order to further explore this huge market, the tobacco industry intensifies its efforts to hook new, young and potentially life-long tobacco users. The health of a significant portion of the world’s youth is therefore at stake.

This year’s World No-Tobacco Day calls for concerted effort to protect the youth from the harm of tobacco by revealing the marketing strategies used by the tobacco industry. It also emphasizes that one of the most effective ways to protect young people from experimenting and becoming regular tobacco users is to ban all forms of direct and indirect tobacco advertising, including promotion of tobacco products and sponsorship by tobacco industry.
