"Towards a Tobacco Endgame in Hong Kong" Conference cum
Reception for the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong

The year 2017 marked the 35th Anniversary of the enactment of the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance, as well as the 10th Anniversary of the amendment of the Ordinance in 2007 which banned smoking in all indoor public places. To mark the milestone for the achievements in tobacco control in Hong Kong, prepare for future challenges ahead and develop blueprint for a smoke-free Hong Kong, Department of Health and Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (COSH) jointly organized the “Towards a Tobacco Endgame in Hong Kong” Conference on 1 December 2017 (Friday). COSH also held the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong after the Conference to celebrate this spectacular occasion and to unite different sectors in the community to strive for a smoke-free Hong Kong.

"Towards a Tobacco Endgame in Hong Kong" Conference

The "Towards a Tobacco Endgame in Hong Kong" Conference cum Reception for the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong was supported by 47 organizations , including medical and healthcare institutes, academia, tobacco control groups and smoking cessation service providers. Continuing education credits were awarded for the Conference, included CME for doctors, CNE for nurses, CEU for pharmacists and CPD for dentist. Exhibition panels were also set up to summarize the tobacco control achievements and the major smoking cessation services provided in Hong Kong. The conference attracted over 200 participants from government departments, academia, medical and healthcare profession, smoking cessation service providers and NGOs supporting tobacco control.

Prof Sophia CHAN (Secretary for Food and Health), Dr Constance CHAN (Director of Health) and Mr Antonio KWONG (COSH Chairman) delivered opening remarks at the Conference. The Conference programme included plenary presentations under the theme “Successful measures curbing tobacco epidemic” and “Testing and regulating novel tobacco products”, which were delivered by 12 distinguished local and overseas speakers. Pioneer and effective tobacco control measures, strategies and recommendations for working towards tobacco endgame were shared with the audience. Reception for the 35th Anniversary of Tobacco Control in Hong Kong

After the Conference, COSH held the Reception to review the tobacco control history in Hong Kong and gather all parties to commemorate the 35th anniversary of tobacco control in Hong Kong. The officiating guests of included Dr Douglas BETTCHER (Director, Department for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases, World Health Organization), Prof Sophia CHAN (Secretary for Food and Health), Dr Constance CHAN (Director of Health) and Mr Antonio KWONG (COSH Chairman).

Over a hundred guests and representative from the government, tobacco control working partners, medical and healthcare professionals, health promotion groups and NGOs supporting tobacco control attended the Reception. A video on the 35th anniversary of tobacco control was premiered at the Reception to review the achievements and contributions of different sectors of the society. A band from Cancer Information, formed by a group of cancer patients and survivors, to perform two classic canton pop songs. The lyrics were rewritten by Prof LAM Tai-hing of The University of Hong Kong and artist Mr Albert AU to spread smoke-free messages and called upon the community to support tobacco control and strive for a smoke-free Hong Kong.
