COSH supports the enlargement of pictorial health warnings
2017.05.23Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health (“COSH”), together with other citizens and organizations, urged the Government and Legislative Council at the meeting of the Subcommittee on Smoking (Public Health) (Notices) (Amendment) Order 2017 of the Legislative Council today (23 May) to enact the enlargement of pictorial health warnings to at least 85% of the two largest surfaces of the packet and of the retail container, increasing the number of forms of health warning from six to twelve and adding quitline 1833 183. The enlargement of pictorial health warnings can reduce the attractiveness of smoking, increase intention to quit and deter the youth from smoking.
Mr Antonio KWONG, COSH Chairman expressed, “Results from survey conducted by COSH and three rounds of public consultations organized by the Legislative Council showed that majority of citizens and organizations supported the enlargement of pictorial health warnings. The enactment of this legislative proposal has been delayed for two years. COSH urges the Government and policy-makers to place public health in top priority and should not make further concessions. The proposed measures should come into operation on 21 October 2017 as scheduled.”
