“Support Tobacco Tax Increase” Online Signatory Campaign

Objectives :
To protect the health of public, prevent youth smoking and encourage smoking cessation, Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health advocates to Financial Secretary for raising tobacco tax until the tobacco tax accounts for at least 75% of the retail price.

Importance of raising tobacco tax :
1. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death. World Health Organization estimates that over 5 million people are killed by tobacco every year. The number of death in year 2030 will exceed 8 million people.
2. Tobacco is responsible for 7,000 deaths caused by smoking and secondhand smoke and community costs of more than HK$5 billion annually in Hong Kong from many tobacco related diseases, such as Cancers, Cardiac Vascular Diseases, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, etc.
3. Raise Taxes on Tobacco, is one of the most effective policies to control the spread of the tobacco epidemic and reduce tobacco consumption ─ current smokers will reduce tobacco consumption or quit smoking, non-smokers will be deterred from taking up smoking, especially children and youth, and ex-smokers will be discouraged to relapse into smoking.
